Who is Louis Mendelsohn?

Louis Mendelsohn (born 1948)

His early years were in a public housing project in Providence, Rhode Island. A triple decker tenement house was his childhood home in the 1950’s.

His Father encouraged him to get a college education, and Louis obliged, graduating from high school in 1965. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, where he received a B.S. degree in Administration and Management Science in 1969.

During his time at graduate school Louis traded equities and stock options. He analysed the markets using hand drawn charts and computed various technical indicators by hand.

A few years later in 1973 he was awarded an M.S.W. degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo. An M.B.A. degree with Honors followed from Boston University in 1977.

Louis married his wife Illyce in 1976. They have raised three sons and have resided on their secluded horse ranch Ramblewood, near Tampa Florida, since 1987.

In 1977, while working as a hospital administrator in Florida, he had access to one of the first personal computers. At this early stage he realised that technical analysis, and therefore trading, could be revolutionised by software. He envisaged the software could help traders make more profitable decisions. With this foresight he began applying the power of personal computers to the task of technical analysis. At the same time he switched from trading equities to trading commodities, which afforded him greater leverage and higher profit potential.

ProfitTaker and VantagePoint AI

Louis formed Vantagepoint AI in 1979 for the purpose of licensing the trading software that he had himself developed.

In 1983 Louis’ accomplishments were being published in a three part series in Futures magazine. This is where he introduced the World to the concept of strategy back testing using personal computers.

Even before the December 1983 issue of Futures magazine went into print, Louis had released the first version of his ProfitTaker Futures Trading Software. This was the World’s first commercially available strategy back testing software for personal computers.

This event changed technical analysis forever. Where Louis led, many many others have followed. ProfitTaker had propelled Louis into the trading software stratosphere. To put this achievement into perspective, TradeStation was not released for another 7-8 years.

Globalisation

The mid 80’s were a dynamic time and Louis foresaw what we now call globalisation.

These changes tore through the financial markets as deregulation occurred on a huge scale. The phenomenon of globalisation was creating interconnections between related global markets. Louis believed that if quantified and incorporated into computerised trading strategies they had the potential to totally transform technical analysis. Technical analysis would change from its narrow single market focus of analysing each market by itself, into a broader, global, multi-market or ‘intermarket’ framework.

This is where the term Intermarket was first thought of.

1986 saw Louis switch his focus entirely to this intermarket approach and the task of adjusting ProfitTaker to this new paradigm had started. Shortly after the stock market crash of October 1987 Louis released the updated software that used intermarket relationships. The goal for this software was to create leading technical indicators that could give traders an advanced warning of impending trend changes, before they actually occurred.

The markets again reeled in October 1989 but Louis was not sitting by idle. He was again trail blazing new software approaches to cement the intermarket philosophy. This time he would enhance his intermarket analysis by incorporating proprietary mathematical processes. These processes applied artificial intelligence neural network pattern recognition to intermarket analysis.

This major work resulted in VantagePoint and was released in 1991.

VantagePoint

Louis has worked tirelessly with his research team to realise the full potential of neural networks and intermarket analysis. Since the 1980’s his team of scientists, engineers and programmers have continued to improve VantagePoint. Improvements in functionality and increases to its predictive accuracy have benefited traders all over the World.

Louis has been granted 2 patents by the U.S. Patent Office.

  • On May 14, 2013 Louis was granted Patent Number 8,442,891. This covered his proprietary computerised processes for applying neural networks to intermarket data.
  • On October 15, 2013 Louis was granted Patent Number 8,560,420. This involved his invention of predictive technical indicators that can forecast trends and changes in trend direction.
